The Finnish Institute in Rome is the oldest of the Finnish cultural and academic institutes. It is located in the 16th-century Villa Lante.
Our work focuses on research and teaching, mainly in the humanities, while also raising awareness of the cultural heritage of Ancient Rome in Finland. The research activities encompass ancient and medieval history, classical philology, classical archaeology and art history, usually reflecting the interests of the current director. We are particularly known for epigraphical studies. The Institute also offers residential accommodation for students, researchers and artists and houses a specialist library.
The Institute was founded in 1954 and is maintained by the Institutum Romanum Finlandiae Foundation.
