Indigenous Drag Excellence XXL

FINNO and FCINY (Finnish Cultural Institute in New York) are supporting the production of Indigenous Drag Excellence XXL<\/em> commissioned for Riddu Ri\u0111\u0111u Festival in S\u00e1pmi.\u00a0The project brings together artists from Australia, Canada, and the Finnish side of S\u00e1pmi.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

For the first time in history, the world will have the chance to experience a drag show at a S\u00e1mi festival. Through the commissioned work Indigenous Drag Excellence XXL<\/em>, the international Indigenous people\u2019s festival Riddu Ri\u0111\u0111u has assembled four Indigenous drag artists from different parts of the world to create a drag show for the main stage.<\/p>\n

Drag queen Feather Talia<\/strong> and drag king Randy Rive<\/strong>r from Winnipeg, Canada, S\u00e1mi drag king Ritni Tears<\/strong> from the Finnish side of S\u00e1pmi, and M\u0101ori drag queen Aunty Tamara<\/strong> from Australia are ready to perform on the main stage at Riddu-sletta on Saturday, July 13th, to showcase what they have been working on for the past six months.<\/p>\n

Drag is an art form that plays with gender expression, where artists dress up in extravagant costumes and wear makeup either as drag kings or drag queens. Now, Riddu Ri\u0111\u0111u\u2019s audience will experience different Indigenous cultures interpreted through the art of drag.<\/p>\n

Festival director Sajje Solbakk<\/strong> is proud of this year\u2019s commissioned work:<\/p>\n

At this year\u2019s festival, Riddu Ri\u0111\u0111u<\/a> has chosen to honor queer Indigenous people as this year\u2019s Northern People at the festival. The commissioned work Indigenous Drag Excellence XXL is one of several program elements under this year\u2019s Northern People project.<\/p>\n

Indigenous Drag Excellence XXL<\/em> is a collaboration with the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York and the Finnish-Norwegian Cultural Institute as part of the pARTir initiative<\/a> funded by the EU \u2013 NextGenerationEU.<\/p>\n
